The Wine: Tsitska, Tsolikouri, Krakhuna Orange 2019
Archil Guniava Tsitska, Tsolikouri, Krakhuna Orange is a natural wine made from a blend of the three Georgian indigenous varietals mentioned in the very name. Vinification in qvevri, traditional big terracotta amphora vessels, no additions, no filtrations, Georgian wine at its best.
The Producer: Archil Guniava
Archil Guniava makes sublimely intense and tautly elegant natural wines in the Imereti region of Western Georgia, as has been a tradition in his family for generations. Unlike Eastern Georgia’s Khaketi’s region, Imereti’s heritage comprises both skin contact amber wines and non-skin contact ones, with perhaps a prevalence of the latter. Archil works with superb results with both techniques, farming organically and vinifying with natural methods, including wild fermentation, the usage of qvevri for both fermentation and aging and refusal of any winemaking additives such as fining, filtration, or added SO2. His focus is on local varieties Tsitska, Tsolikouri, and Krakhuna, from which he crafts wines of golden-hued richness, precision, and pure intensity.
The Region: Western Georgia
