The Wine: L'Epicurien 2020
L'Epicurien by young French vigneron Gregory Guillaume is a red natural wine brimming with vibrant light and a true, terroir-driven personality. This is 100% Grenache Noir from a tiny, organically farmed plot on clay and limestone soils in the Ardeche region. Spontaneous fermentation and carbonic maceration occur for about a month, after which the wine sees a patient elevage in old wood for a year. Fresh and explosively juicy, it shines with wild berries, black plums, and pleasantly pungent balsamic notes.
The Producer: Gregory Guillaume
The young vigneron Gregory Guillaume makes truly explosive and terroir-driven delicious natural wines in France’s Ardeche region, near the village of Villeneuve de Berg. Like more than a few vignerons, Gregory started out with no background whatsoever in viticulture or winemaking but simply as a natural wine lover and avid drinker. He simply felt deeply inspired to begin making the artisanal, authentic wines that he loved to drink after moving to the region to explore the local caves. The soils are mostly clay and limestones and Gregory uses no chemicals or additives either in the vineyard or the cellar, focusing on making pure, light-filled wines that are just an unadulterated joy to drink.
